Lori Miles ~ Photographer People often ask me how I got started in photography. I grew up with a camera in my hand, always taking pictures of friends and family. But it was when I picked up my husband’s 35 mm camera more than 15 years ago that something ‘clicked’ and I knew photography would be my life’s passion. Word about my photographs spread quickly and before I knew it, photography grew from a hobby into a successful business. After seven years, I’m still amazed and inspired that I get to do what I love for a living. While I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside other professional photographers and take courses over the years to expand my technical knowledge, my vision comes from within – I’m proud to be a self taught photographer. I believe truly remarkable images come from a strong connection with your subjects, and my skill behind the camera is fueled by my love of people. I make my clients feel at ease so they can relax, let their guard down and reveal glimpses of their true selves. I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with ways of capturing authentic moments and people’s true emotions, and that style has become my trademark. Each person I photograph and every wedding I shoot is unique. I bring along a sense of humour, an artistic eye, and a ton of film and enthusiasm to document the day. I like to work behind the scenes to capture moments as they unfold, rather than manufacture them for the camera. Whether I’m climbing ladders or stopping traffic to get the perfect wedding shot or standing my ground with an Italian customs guard to make sure my rolls of wedding film don’t go through airport x-ray, I’m passionate about my work. After shooting thousands of rolls of film, I still get a thrill from seeing the final results. So much of my inspiration and support comes from my husband and my daughter, both of whom I’m madly in love with. I also give credit to my family, in particular to my father, who taught me the value of hard work and who gave me the nickname, Sweet Pea. Having my photographs published is always a thrill, and is an important measure of my work. My photos are regularly featured in Real Weddings Magazine and on the cover of West Coast Families Magazine. I’ve also been profiled on City TV’s Vancouver Breakfast Television, CTV’s News Hour and in the Vancouver Sun newspaper. Thank you for visiting Sweet Pea Photography. |
